Oh dear, I’m afraid I feel a story coming on now, and it’s your fault.

I’m building a vault for my idiosyncrasies now. You can’t have them.

…all of which, admittedly, would be super-cool and well-worth the admission fee of a few idiosyncrasies, now I think of it.

I am faaabulous. I feel like a student again. So little sleep, so much excitement, such a Vulcan detachment from my daily grind which nevertheless can’t prevent some of my Summer Passion from seeping into my Day Job despite my efforts to be *exactly* above average…

Have you seen wave.google.com? What struck me as interesting about it, and setting it somewhat apart from simply the ‘next big thing’ as Twitter was, is the perspective of the designers. Their starting point was ‘What would e-mail look like if invented today?’ Rather than *merely* evolving existing (and ancient) technologies; e-mail by now being a 40-year-old protocol dreamt up by Clarke or Asimov, as the legend goes — they took a much more insightful view. What should it do, in order to meet our evident desires?

Not available yet, but showing great promise, especially since Google plans to license it as an open, free protoco. There are summarized versions of the demo talk on YouTube, too

There are some truly wondrous tools evoling, though. I know they’re flighty, they’re likely to evaporate sooner rather than later, replaced constantly by the New Thing — but that’s magnificent. Ultimately they’re all about people talking, and the tools simply allow people to more effectively intersect with people they care about on topics of interest with ever decreasing investments of time and energy.

I love conversation, and this is as much an unsubtle attempt to spread my thought capital so as to hawk my wares and feed my ego, as it is a genuine desire to see what’s out there, what kind of people are talking, what I can learn and contribute. In my defense, I select my targets with some degree of morality — those who’ve expressed an interest in me or my goods before are the first to receive my crosshairs

And sure, much of the chatter on Twatter and the quizzing on Facebook is all dust and air — but so is much of regular conversation. We greet each other with ‘How are you?” — and most of the time that’s a vapid, empty query that serves no purpose other than to springboard some vapid, empty mouth-flapping which nevertheless bolsters our mood and makes us feel better-connected.

Grant me my little idiosyncracies, mister horse? Pweeeaze?

I stand aloof and immune, as I don’t go near most of those places and am even seriously thinking of dropping twitter. If you really seek to be an ephemeral “star” then that’s probably one way to do it. However, it may garner you more notoriety than actual popularity.
